Happy Birthday Kylie Elyse Clough!

SHE'S HERE!!!!!!!!

Kylie Elyse Clough was born on August 24, 2014 at 2:59PM.  She weighed in at 8 pounds 12 ounces and 20.5 inches long.  Here's how it went down:

I woke up on August 24th about 2:15AM with a strange pain in my back.  I got up to pee and then laid back down.  I fell asleep for about another 20-30 minutes until I was awoken again by back pain.

I laid awake in bed and stated noting the time I felt the back pain.  I record 2:38, 2:55, 3:08, 3:15, 3:48.  At this point, I felt like what I was feeling was contractions.  I had had back labor with McKenzie and some of them were feeling similar to her labor.  I woke Chris up at 3:45 and told him I was feeling contractions.

I continued to note the time of the pains: 3:52, 4:05, 4:38, 5:09, 5:39, 7:00, 7:50.  The interval was very inconsistent, but the pains were definitely not going away.  I ended up texting Tracy and Mom at 4ish and had them on alert.  Then I ended up telling them to come over around 4:30.  I was nervous the labor would suddenly turn intense and fast and I wanted someone there for McKenzie.

When Mom and Tracy arrived I walked and bounced on the exercise ball.  It seemed the contractions were slowing down.  Mom and Tracy ended up falling asleep, so Chris and I went back to bed.  I feel asleep for a short time before the pains woke me again.  I decided to call the practice at 8AM.

A midwife from Harvard Vanguard called me back very quickly.  I told her the contractions weren't that consistent but they were getting worse and about 7-9 minutes apart.  To my surprise she told me to come in to the hospital.

So I threw a few more things into my hospital bag, woke up Tracy and Mom and then decided I needed a kiss from McKenzie before I left.  So I woke her up too!  Then we were off to the hospital. We left Wrentham at 8:30AM. Thank goodness it was a weekend because we were on the road right at rush hour.  We got to Newton-Wellesley in about 25 minutes.  We arrived about 9:05AM.  When I got up to maternity I filled out paperwork and headed back to antenatal.  I waited with another couple for about 10 minutes until a nurse came back and told me she was going to hook me up to a monitor to see what the contractions were doing.  This was about 9:45AM.  We watched Honey I Shrunk the Kids while we sat there.  I had quite a few contractions and was hoping they would "admit" me as soon as the nurse got back.  Unfortunately when she FINALLY got back (everything seemed so slow!!!) she said the monitor hadn't picked up any contractions!!!!!!!!  She then said we'd just wait for the doctor to come and talk to me.  The doctor was coming to see me because the midwife had just been bombarded with women in labor.  I don't remember her name, but she was so nice and I remember thinking I would have been happy having her for my delivery.  The doctor came in to tlak to me and ask me a bunch of questions that I was trying to rush through.  Then she said when she got back they would move me to a bed to check me.  Again, this seemed to be so long!

At about 10:30AM I finally got into a bed and the doctor checked me and I was 4-5cm dialated, 80% effaced and -3 station.  She wanted me to walk around while they got things ordered up for my epidural, but I couldn't walk!  Every time I tried to move I'd get a horrible contraction.  I asked for the epidural asap.  I laid back in bed after I called the nurse and she started doing paperwork and drawing blood labs and getting the IV nurse in to start an IV.  This is when nurses switched over and so that process had to be done as well.  I wanted to scream LETS MOVE IT PEOPLE!  EVERYONE was so nice this time around though, so I tried to stay calm.  Just before noon I finally was wheeled into a labor and delivery room.  At 12:15 the anethesiologist arrived and was very quick and great at inserting the epidural.  I started feeling relief very quickly.  Unfortuantely as I progressed and the contractions got worse, I could start to feel them again.  I up'd my own meds two-three times and then they called the anethesiologist back to give me a boost which finally helped.  I then got checked again (I only got checked twice in the whole labor) and I was 10 cm and 100% effaced but baby was still a little high and my water hadn't broken.  The midwife debated whether to break my water or not.  Finally at 2:40 she decided to break my water.  At 2:45 I started pushing.  I did somewhere between 4 and 8 pushes.  After the first push they could already see her head!!!  Then at 2:59PM Kylie Elyse Clough was born and immediately put on my chest. She still had the sac around her! She was pretty blue and slow to cry.  They let her stay for a minute and delayed cord clamping, but then decided she needed some more intervention to get her to start crying.  They got one cry out of her on my chest then took her to the warmer for a little oxygen.  Once her color was better she came back to me and we snuggled until being wheeled to post pardum.  We spent two nights in the hospital and came home on August 26th!
